Sam Altman Ousted from OpenAI, CTO Mira Murati Named Interim CEO Sam Altman Ousted from OpenAI, CTO Mira Murati Named Interim CEO

OpenAI has removed founder Sam Altman from its CEO position, with CTO Mira Murati being promoted to interim CEO, according to a November 17 blog post.
Mira Murati Appointed as Interim CEO
The Board of Directors engaged in a “deliberative review process,” concluding that Altman “was not consistently candid in his communications with the board, hindering its ability to exercise its responsibilities.” Altman could not be immediately reached for comment.
The Board of Directors expressed commitment to the mission of OpenAI, stating, “Mira is exceptionally qualified to step into the role of interim CEO. We have the utmost confidence in her ability to lead OpenAI during this transition period.”
New Leadership at OpenAI
The board acknowledged Sam’s contributions to the founding and growth of OpenAI but emphasized the need for new leadership as the organization moves forward. Additionally, the board’s chairman, Greg Brockman, will be stepping down from his position while remaining as an employee, “reporting to the CEO,” according to the post.
Board of Directors and Future Plans
The board of directors consists of Adam D’Angelo, Tasha McCauley, Helen Toner, and OpenAI chief scientist Ilya Sutskever. The majority of board members are “independent directors” who do not hold equity in OpenAI.
This development comes amidst increasing demand for artificial intelligence (AI) applications. OpenAI has also put a temporary halt on new ChatGPT Plus sign-ups.
Sam Altman’s Other Ventures
Sam Altman is also the founder of Tools for Humanity, as well as the developer of the crypto project Worldcoin. Cointelegraph reached out to Tools for Humanity for comment but did not receive a response at the time of publication.
This is a developing story, and further information will be added as it becomes available.
