MakerDAO Co-founder Suggests Fork of Solana Codebase for Native Chain

In a proposal submitted by Rune Christensen, the co-founder of MakerDAO, he suggests building the project’s upcoming native chain, “NewChain,” based on a fork of Solana’s codebase instead of the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM). Although MakerDAO has longstanding ties with Ethereum, Christensen believes that Solana’s codebase offers several advantages.
Why Solana’s Codebase?
Christensen highlights three key reasons why he believes Solana’s codebase should be used as the foundation for NewChain:
- Technical Quality: According to Christensen, Solana’s codebase is highly optimized for operating a singular, efficient blockchain. It was designed with a deep understanding of the challenges and bottlenecks faced by blockchains, aligning well with the objective of NewChain to address MakerDAO’s technical debt.
- Resilience: Christensen notes that the Solana ecosystem has proven its resilience by successfully navigating challenges, including the FTX blowup, without crumbling. He believes this resilience will ensure the long-term viability of the Solana ecosystem and provide MakerDAO with access to a high-quality pool of talent.
- Appchains Adaptability: Christensen points out that examples of the Solana codebase being forked and adapted as appchains already exist. Therefore, MakerDAO can follow a similar process to develop NewChain.
When questioned about his preference for Solana code over the EVM, Christensen acknowledged that while the EVM is crucial for building user-facing applications, it does not meet MakerDAO’s specific backend requirements. He believes that solutions like Solana or something like Sei would be a better fit for MakerDAO’s specialized backend needs.
The Future of NewChain
NewChain will serve as the backend for MakerDAO’s SubDAO tokenomics and governance security. The project’s governance token, Maker (MKR), and stablecoin, Dai (DAI), will continue to operate on Ethereum as usual.
It is important to note that NewChain is part of the fifth and final phase of the MakerDAO “Endgame” upgrade, which aims to fully re-implement the Maker protocol into a new stand-alone blockchain. This phase is expected to take approximately three years to complete.
Editor Notes: Exploring NewChain on Solana
The proposal to build NewChain using Solana’s codebase showcases the dynamic nature of the crypto space and the continuous search for innovative solutions. MakerDAO’s decision to explore alternatives for its native chain demonstrates their commitment to technical excellence and efficiency.
Ultimately, the success of NewChain will depend on the seamless integration of Solana’s features with MakerDAO’s requirements. If executed effectively, the use of Solana’s codebase could enhance the security, scalability, and overall performance of the MakerDAO ecosystem.
